This article is a brief explanation of MTP.

MTP

In previous articles we have discussed the classic fibre optic products, through adapters, pigtails, splice protectors, and fusion splicers. All of these may seem like an awful lot of specialised work or something that is best left to the professionals. Today we are covering off a simple fibre optic solution that ANYONE can sell and ANYONE can install. A pre-terminated, pre-tested and certified full fibre optic network that could be installed, commissioned and live within minutes. We are of course talking about the many kinds Pre-terminated Fibre - today more specifically MTP/MPO. No tools, no welding hair-like glass fibres together - just “plug & play” so to speak. The fibre optic technology we are covering off today really is future ready technology.

What is MTP?

MTP stands for "Multifibre Termination Push-on" and is exactly as it says. Each “MTP” Connector will actually have 12 or 24 core of fibre pre-terminated to one connector. This connector is designed to precisely line up multiple fibre cores next to each other rather than individual connectors for each core. The cables can be custom made to suit any length but are usually sold in 5/10/15/20/25 and 50m lengths called “Trunk Leads”. Our Stronglink branded MTP comes in these standards lengths.

As well as MTP/MPO Trunk Leads there are “MTP Cassettes”. These cassettes are basically a pigtail in an enclosure that is terminated to an MTP connector at the back and LC or SC connectors at the front as you can see in the below pictures. These Cassettes are usually designed to fit into a Modular style FOBOT just like a FAP.

MTP Cassettes

With the help of an “MTP Cassette”, a contractor can walk up with a predetermined length trunk lead, plug it in, and be done. Compare this to the fusion splicing process we covered off in the last newsletter and already you can see the savings in time and money. Also then think about the equipment and training we mentioned you need to be able to perform this kind of termination. Imagine now you are the contractor in a data centre with over 1000 cores to terminate. Which method would you prefer to use?

In an upcoming article, we will discuss the obvious (and not so obvious) benefits of MTP. For the moment I want to make you aware of this great product that we stock on our shelves in our Stronglink brand.
