This article is about the Features and Benefits of MTP.

Features and Benefits of MTP

We have discussed "Multifibre Termination Push-on" (MTP) in a previous article. A pre-terminated, pre-tested, and pre-certified product that allows instant installation of a fibre network. We discussed the fact that MTP allows an installer to basically “plug and play” a data network. Here we are going to go over the benefits in more detail. This question is then:

Why use MTP?

MTP Cassette

There are many reasons for having an MTP solution installed over other technologies - most of the time it will be cost driven. This article however will aim to focus on the points that can help you SELL these solutions. These include a faster install, easier network maintenance, and its reusability.

Faster install

Systems that utilise MTP require no time at all installing compared to almost all other copper and fibre networks. The main reason for this is the product's ability to “plug and play”. This means a data network can be up and running within minutes of pulling the products out of the boxes. Being a pre-certified product means less time testing and measuring for certified sites; lengthy end-to-end and signal loss testing is limited; and a network can be live a lot earlier than expected. This will massively impact the labour costs for a project, meaning your contractor will have a larger profit margin and, hopefully, so will you!

 MTP

Maintenance

Maintenance is less confusing and inconvenient with MTP. Most faulty fibre installs require a full network shutdown to achieve isolation of the fault. This becomes even more daunting when the fault is in the cabling. This means an installer may have to re-run an entire length of fibre. Then once that's done, re-terminate, re-test, and re-certify the entire job. With MTP, if a fault is found within the cassette, that's okay, just swap it out with another one and determine the cassette’s fault another time. The same goes with the fibre. If there is a fault, unplug the old one and plug in the new.

Cable

Reusable

Let's face it, installing a data network is like buying a brand new car. Once you install it, the true value of that data jack or copper cable is gone. You will never be able to sell a network you have installed right? Well MTP changes that. Many customers who lease properties are reluctant to spend money upgrading their network because in two years time they may have to do it all over again. MTP (and pre-term fibre which I will explain later) allows you to install a data network using fibre - and if you need to move, simply pull it out, pack it up, and reinstall it in the new property. That fibre network becomes an asset not just a painful cost.
